When It comes to the Remodeling/New Contruction of your home it all comes down to one question, Who can I trust? This is a very good question. The best answer to that question is, after talking to the person/company do you fell you can trust them. Most of the time If the person is shady you can tell by talking with them for 5/10 min. I know the news and special tv reports always say never give money upfront(its a warning sign) but thats not the case. In this economy a contractor can be taken advantage of just as quickly as a homeowner. Liens you say, Just because a company files a lien is no guarantee they will ever get there money back. I mean look at all of the contractors that lost money when Harvest Homes went under. Most had filed liens but got nothing. Why you ask? Because the laws are not contractor/homeowner friendly, Some contractors filed liens with the advise of lawyers and still got nothing because the lawyers did not know the laws and pre lien fillings. So now that I have got slightly off topic, Contractors that ask for money upfront are not all out to rob you. A good rule of thumb is never overpay your contractor. This does not include the money upfront that is to purchase matieral. If you are that worried about money for material, tell you contractor you would like to go with them to purchase and pay for this material or set up your own account at your local hardware store. An Honest Contractor will have no problem with this. So after talking with your contractors ask yourself, Can I trust them? If the answer is yes then your probally right if the answer is no or not sure keep looking at I promise you will find the right one. Also make sure you ask for samples of previous work. For an example my website gallery is where i send my customers.
